E foi a partir deste último encontro que o assunto, sob o nome de sustentabilidade, começa a aparecer com maior incidência e a ganhar grande notoriedade no Brasil.
Transcendendo apenas à questão ambiental, a sustentabilidade passa a ser relacionada a outros setores da sociedade como a economia, a educação e a cultura; percebe-se que ela está intimamente ligada ao desenvolvimento social e ratifica-se que saber suprir as necessidades presentes, sem interferir negativamente nas gerações futuras, sinaliza um caminho ideal a ser trilhado. A preocupação e o cuidado com o coletivo tornam-se fundamentais e, dessa forma, fomenta-se a ideia de que as práticas individuais devam convergir sempre para soluções que atinjam a garantam uma melhora comum a todos.
E nesta perspectiva, de ter um olhar diferente para o planeta e o futuro do mesmo, encontram-se inseridos os jovens, protagonistas das grandes transformações sociais. Donos de uma consciência mais ampla estão cada vez mais receptivos a mudar atitudes e a promover o desenvolvimento sustentável por meio do comprometimento com o meio ambiente e com a sociedade; há um nítido interesse dos mesmos em valorizar a gestão inteligente dos recursos naturais e um estilo de vida com hábitos mais saudáveis e sem excessos.
Diante deste contexto, a formação destes jovens, e das lideranças que atuam no processo de ensino-aprendizagem com os mesmos no tema da sustentabilidade, torna-se essencial.
